I believe it is all in the expectations we communicate to our students and the persistence we have in maintaining those expectations. We wouldn’t accept things like, “lol” and “wazzup” in paper/pencil writing (and we don’t typically get that because we make clear what is appropriate). Likewise, we shouldn’t accept it electronically, regardless of the format.
I think another issue that we need to keep in mind is that ideas are “king,” not mechanics. Expectations for correct mechanics are important, but they are also easily developed. We need not lose sight of the ideas expressed just because they are not expressed perfectly.
